ON Tuesday October 30, DA Western Cape spokesman on Local Government Masizole Mnqasela said the Democratic Alliance in the province was “deeply saddened” by the loss of eight lives amid raging fires in the Southern Cape.
“I commend the Western Cape department of Local Government’s swift intervention which saw more than 400 firefighters from CapeNature, the City of Cape Town, West Coast, Overberg and Winelands District municipalities deployed to douse the blaze.
“Furthermore, two helicopters, two fixed-wing bombers and one SANDF helicopter are on standby and rendering aerial support,” said Mnqasela.
“I salute the brave men and women who are working tirelessly and under difficult conditions to control the fires and save lives. I furthermore commend volunteers who have invested their time and resources to assist those affected by the blaze.
“As the DA in the Western Cape, we urge that all residents take extreme caution in affected areas and we implore residents to cooperate with emergency services in light of the ongoing evacuations taking place. I am pleased that community centres in Knysna and George have been made available for residents to take refuge.”
