Running in heaven, feeling like hell…

Two crazy Plett Athletics Club members, Lee Rawlings and Andrew Damp, took on gale-force conditions in the Cape of Storms to run the spine of the Peninsula from Point to pub – the infamous Puffer ‘ultra fun run’ over 84 kilometres. LISA RAWLINGS tells their story…

LAST-minute decisions - shorts or tights, raingear or windbreakers, road or trail shoes - occupied our pre-dawn minds before driving south at 3:30am to meet the bus for Cape Point. In no time it was heads down into a fierce north-westerly gale, headlamps cutting bright tunnels into the dark.
Puffer is in fact 50% tar road but each time you exchange tarmac for trail, you run straight up a mountain. This is where ordinary mortals take a steady walk to catch their breath after relentless pounding along the tar.
Soon one slips into the rhythm of walking the steep ups, jogging the flats and flying any available downhill, dancing across the stepping sto...

Otter to boost Sterreweg’s good work

JAMES STEWART of the Pennypinchers Adventure racing team explains why he can’t wait for this year’s Otter African Trail Run

ON September 25, the second edition of the Hi-Tec Otter Trail Run will take place along the Tsitsikamma coastline. Only in its baby shoes, this is already a must-do event on the SA trail running calendar - proven when all race entries were sold out within days.
The famous five-day SANParks Otter Trail provides the 42km runners' route. It is a trail of breathtaking beauty but it's strenuous stuff, and most who complete it happily discard their worn-out boots in the Nature's Valley boot tree.
I was first persuaded to attempt the Otter as a trail run by adventure racing legend John Collins back in 2004. I had only ever run a half-marathon before and was clearly not ready - a point John proved by fast disappearing over the rocks (a familiar sight to those in our game). We reached the halfway point exhausted, w...

Sportsmans help revitalise Hockey

For the last few years hockey at Wittedrift High has been on the decline due to the lack of coaches and proper organisation. But this year was very different: thanks Plett’s Sportsmans bar & restaurant, the Wittedrift first team hockey boys were able to walk onto the field in new uniforms, feeling confident that they were better prepared than ever before.
The boys thank Sportsmans owner Tim Goosen for his friendliness and can-do attitude when approached about the sponsorship and throughout the entire process. “We know where we’ll be watching sport from now on,” they say.
Thanks to the sponsorship and the guidance of coaches Billy van Schie and Jason Loadman, the team reports the completion of a successful season, saying: “We weren’t able to win all our matches, but we played like champions in each one of them!”
