Luyolo rocks SA’s art world with operatic flair

Oakhill Grade 5 student Luyolo Mvimbi, 11, took one gold and two silver medals at the National Championship of Performing Arts in Rustenburg last month - an achievement that means he will perform in Los Angeles in July. The keen drama student is the son of former Bitou mayor Lulama Mvimbi and his proud wife, Belinda, who now live happily in Knysna. Says Luyolo: ‘I want to cut an opera CD as soon as possible, but also a rock one...’ Multi-talented, indeed!

‘Murdered to Death’ staged in Plett next week

AFTER forming the Bitou Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) late last year, David Hall-Green and Roger Davis have been working hard to make their very first production a reality. Their first task was to find a play that would be suitable for local conditions - the right set, number of parts and scenes, etc.
They acquired the rights to a play by contemporary British writer Peter F Gordon, in the style of a typical Agatha Christie murder mystery, set in the 1930s. When the call went out to aspiring local actors, they were pleasantly surprised to find how many talented would-be actors and actresses were to be found in Plett.
They soon cast the 10 roles (five men and five women) and then started rehearsing. This presented its own challenges as the amateur cast initially struggled to combine the difficult task of learning lines with actually acting their parts!
While having great fun during the rehearsal process, they are all taking their parts and the play very seriously....
